Tragic Whale Collision on Banderas Bay
February 8, 2007

Sadly on Saturday, February 3, 2007 a newly born Humpback calf was believed to have been struck by an unlicensed whale watching vessel. At present, the animal is still alive. It’s health condition remains unknown. Only time will tell and we may never know the final outcome of this terrible incident.

A local marine biologist’s is quoted as saying, “We have no idea if it will be able to recover in order to make it during the migration. It’s hard to tell, but I guess it is very unlikely it will survive on the long term.”

We trust that all of our readers are making informed and responsible decisions when it comes to choosing an authorized and responsible whale watching company for their trip out on the bay.

We will continue to post a list of authorized whale watching vessels to help make the selection process easier. We also maintain a list of recommended whale watching organizations that have proven to us that they abide by the official Mexican laws related to the observation of Humpback whales.

Please be a responsible whale watcher so that we can avoid horrible mistakes like this in the future and please report any violations. Thank you.
